Indian Renaissance Institute

The Indian Renaissance Institute was founded on November 20, 1946 as a non-profit organisation and registered under the Societies’ Registration Act, 1860 with a view to developing renaissance movement in India on the basis of scientific humanism. M.N. Roy was the founder and guiding foce of the Institute. Till his death on January 25, 1954 he was the Institute’s Director.

Acutely conscious of the necessity of providing a philosophical foundation to the values of democracy, Roy formulated a number of theses which were discussed among leading members of the Institute and were later published as the “Twenty Two Theses of New Humanism.” These theses seek to define the postulates of a comprehensive personal-social philosophy based on naturalism; to identify the physical-biological sources of the values of freedom, rationalism and morality; and to indicate the principles on which political and social democracy may be organized from the grassroots. In 1947 M.N. Roy published a manifesto under the title “New Humanism” in support of the “Twenty Two Theses”.

Location

The residence of M.N. Roy and Ellen Roy – a bungalow with lawns stretching over about seven bighas – at 13 Mohini Road, Dehradun, was purchased by the colleagues and admirers of M.N. Roy, namely, Justice V.M. Tarkunde and V.B. Karnik. However, as the Roys were not interested in personal property, the same was made over to the Institute when it was registered. A library – the two storey building in red colour – was constructed on a part of the lawns in 1948. Till early 1980 the Head Office of the Institute was located at this address.
